A Faculty member at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences. Prior to this, she was a Principal Research Assistant at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. She is a microbiologist with her specialty in the field of bacteriology.
EDUCATION
She had her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology (currently Animal Biology and Conservation Science) and her Masters in Microbiology both at the University of Ghana. She then pursued a PhD in Microbiology at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Basel, Switzerland.
WORK EXPERIENCE
She started her career working with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research for 8 years. Within this time, she worked on various projects in food microbiology, wound microbiology and mycobacteriology. Her PhD thesis looked at secondary infection in Buruli ulcer disease and was aimed at identifying factors that affected the wound healing potential of Buruli ulcer wounds. Her PhD work led to the identification of a recently emerging and rapidly spreading strain of Community acquired Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and this formed the basis for her current research interest in antibiotic resistance.
RESEARCH OUTPUT
Her research area is in antibiotic resistance and infection biology. Her current research interest is in detecting and monitoring antibiotic resistant and antibiotic resistant organisms in Ghana with the aim of gathering baseline data which will lead to the setting up of a surveillance machinery in the country.
