Dr. Benjamin Amoakohene is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of General and Liberal Studies of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, where he teaches Academic and Communicative Skills. This programme has as its aim to help students gain the needed skills and competence in writing and speaking for their academic and professional development.
Education
Dr. Benjamin Amoakohene had his terminal degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. The focus of his PhD thesis was to use the Systemic Functional Linguistics perspective to text analysis, specifically the textual metafunction, as projected by Halliday (1967, 1970, 1985, 1994 and 2004); Halliday and Hasan (1976) and Martin and Rose (2003) to explore texture in first-year Ghanaian undergraduate students’ essays. The findings of this study have implications for curricular development and syllabus design for English Language academic writing in higher education. Dr. Amoakohene’s PhD thesis was nominated as one of the top six PhD theses in 2021 for the Research and Innovation Award at the University of the Western Cape. He had his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Language from the University of Cape Coast. He is also a product of Kumasi Anglican Senior High School.
Work Experience
Before becoming a Lecturer at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dr. Benjamin Amoakohene had served as a Teaching Assistant at the Department of English and the Department of Communication Studies of the University of Cape Coast. At these two Departments, he assisted in both teaching and research. He also used to be a tutor at the College of Distance Education (CoDE) and the Institute for Distance and e-Learning (IDeL) of the University of Cape Coast and the University of Education, Winneba respectively. Aside from the above-mentioned positions, Dr. Amoakohene has had the privilege to serve as the Examination Officer, Coordinator and the Head of the Department of General and Liberal Studies of the University of Health and Allied Sciences at different times.
Science /Research Interests
His areas of research are Genre Studies, Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics. He is a founding member of Emerging Scholars in Language, Literature, Arts and Communication (ESLLAC) of the University of Cape Coast. Dr. Amoakohene is also a member of the Systemic Functional Linguistics group, Ghana and the Linguistic Association of Ghana. He has also served in two capacities as a Secretary and Vice President of the Sadia Students’ Foundation at the University of Cape Coast. Currently, he is the Organizer for the Ghana Names Society.
