Professor Seth Kwabena Amponsah has assumed office at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) as the Dean of School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences (SBBS) on August 1, 2025.
The foundation Dean of SBBS was Professor Festus Adzaku, whose tenure ended in 2015. He was followed by Professor Peter Atadja (2016), Professor Theophilus Adiku (2017) and Professor Richard Harry Asmah (2019). Professor Amponsah assumed the office as the 5th Dean of the School, succeeding Professor Richard Harry Asmah, whose tenure ended on July 31, 2025.
Professor Amponsah marked the commencement of his tenure with the maiden SBBS staff durbar under the theme “Leadership, Vision and Community: A New Chapter Begins”, during which he outlined his vision, focusing on holistic approach to personnel motivation across all levels, strengthening research capacity through the development of specialized research groups and organizing research write-shops and faculty mentorship programmes with a target of increasing annual research publication output by 5%.

The 3 Heads of Department (HoDs) of the School namely Professor Clement Okraku Tettey (Biomedical Sciences Department), Dr. Felix Odame (Basic Sciences Department) and Dr. Kodjo Tetekpor (General and Liberal Studies Department), together with the Head of Administration of the School, Mr. Iddrisu Nurudeen Issaka took turns to make insightful remarks.
The maiden SBBS staff durbar also saw the celebration of Dr. Clement Okraku Tettey on his promotion to the rank of Associate Professor. The recognition was aimed at motivating other faculty members in the pursuit of academic and professional excellence.
The University’s education is designed in a way that, regardless of the academic programme studied at the senior high school level, all undergraduate students pass through SBBS for their level 100 and partly level 200 where they receive comprehensive understanding of Basic Sciences, which are essential for all healthcare education. The solid foundation UHAS students are provided with in the Basic Sciences at levels 100 and 200 at SBBS explains why they always excel in their chosen healthcare fields. In addition to the university-wide courses, the School runs BSc. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and MSc/MPhil/PhD Biomedical Science programmes.
As UHAS continues to leverage on Basic Sciences in helping to actualize the aspirations of students and players in the healthcare space, the assumption of office of Professor Seth Kwabena Amponsah as the Dean of SBBS and his vision for the School are considered a significant boost to the mission of improving healthcare in Ghana and beyond, through teaching, research, innovation and practical orientation.
