The Department of Biomedical Sciences is one of three departments of the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences. It is an interdisciplinary department founded from the inception of the University. The mission of the department is to become a world-class centre of excellence for training and research that will provide relevant and timely solutions in the life and health sciences. The Department has faculty with a plethora of expertise in the biomedical sciences. The Department equips students in the theoretical and practical aspects of biomedical sciences and produces graduates who are well suited in research laboratories, clinical laboratories, regulatory authorities, pharmaceutical and health industries as well as academia. The Department will continue to produce scientists who can solve real world problems using translational research. Projects currently ongoing at the department can be categorized into the following themes: malaria, COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, natural products and drug discovery, microbiome and genomics and non-communicable diseases. These projects are largely supported by local and international grants. The Department is actively involved in the Human Phenome Project in collaboration with Fudan University, China and also collaborating with the British Council in providing entrepreneurial training to our undergraduate students.
