About

The Department of General and Liberal Studies is a multidisciplinary academic unit within the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences (SBBS) at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). The Department plays a critical support role by offering cross-cutting courses that build essential competencies in communication, cultural literacy, social awareness and analytical thinking. These competencies are vital in producing well-rounded professionals in the health and allied sciences. Its teaching philosophy is anchored in providing students with a strong academic foundation that complements their scientific and clinical training. The Department made up of four core units: each unit contributes uniquely to the Department’s interdisciplinary mandate:

1.    Academic and Communicative Skills Unit - strengthens students’ proficiency in academic writing, oral communication and critical reading skills, vital for academic success and professional communication. 

2.    French Unit - delivers both general and purpose-specific language instruction, including Functional French and French for Medical Professionals, to prepare students for multilingual healthcare environments and international collaboration.

3.    African Studies Unit - deepens students’ understanding of African heritage, values, and socio-political systems, fostering cultural intelligence and a sense of identity.

4.    Sociology Unit - explores social structures, behaviour, and health-related societal issues, enhancing students' awareness of the social determinants of health and their implications in real-world settings.

Together, these units create a well-balanced and holistic academic experience that complements the scientific orientation of SBBS and reinforces UHAS’s mission to produce globally competent and socially conscious health professionals. Each unit delivers specialized content tailored to meet the diverse academic and professional needs of students. Areas of specialization reflect the Department's responsiveness to the evolving demands of healthcare and academic environment.
