Investing in Science, Improving Lives: A Five-Year Journey of Impact

Between 2020 and 2025, the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences secured several competitive research and development grants that strengthened its capacity for research, innovation and community engagement. These grants reflect the School’s growing recognition as a centre for impactful scientific inquiry and applied health research.

Significant funding supported studies on sandfly-associated pathogens and their public health implications, with a focus on reducing the burden of leishmaniasis and improving disease prevention strategies. Complementary projects assessed household risk factors in affected communities, providing evidence to guide targeted interventions. The School also received grants to promote equity in science education through high school–based programmes aimed at reducing gender segregation in STEM and encouraging greater female participation.

Additional support advanced rural development through improved fish-processing technologies, enhancing food safety, productivity and livelihoods. In student development, funding enabled entrepreneurship and innovation training, equipping graduates with practical skills for employment and self-reliance. Major collaborative funding further strengthened research infrastructure through the establishment of a specialized laboratory in human phenomics and disease genetics. Support for clinical trials and laboratory improvements also enhanced diagnostic accuracy and research quality. Collectively, these grants have reinforced the School’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and national development.
